A month or two ago Laura and Justin, my neighbors here in Menlo Park, switched their grand 2010 adventure from a trip to Europe to a trip up Mt. Kilimanjaro. Alex and I were curious: what would this kind of trip take to pull off? Then, our friend from Caltech mentioned that she also wanted to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro this year. The coincidence was just what we needed to get us motivated. We decided we'd try to bring together a group of our friends to climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro in the fall. We figured we could pull in two, possibly four more, and we knew Justin was also looking to pull two of his friends in as well.
We mentioned the trip to two of our close friends here in the bay area, Ryan and Talia (see our elephant seal adventure together here), and it turns out they were already on a first name basis with the mountain. "Oh, yes, we were planning on hiking Kili already!"
Another couple also seemed optimistic, rounding out our potential group to twelve.
Here's what we're so excited about:
Are we crazy? Yes. But, this trip seems to be the epitome of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Isn't that what a honeymoon is for?
Now to figure out timing, finances, gear, and training...
wait, are you counting me??
