At 9 am this morning a very tired Alex defended his thesis. In order to make sure his presentation was perfect, he stayed up the entire night before--a decision he would probably advise others not to make. But, I would have to say that aside from a few minor details, everything was perfect. At approximately 10 am, Alex officially passed his thesis defense, obtained all of the necessary signatures, and became a PhD.
We had a nice lunch with boss, his mom, and Bob. Then Alex disappeared into a meeting with some professors while I roamed the campus saying hi to friends and collecting letters of reference for an upcoming application. When we met back up, we headed over to Anna's place to see her nice retirement home and her two playful kittens. Within seconds of entering Anna's apartment, Alex was asleep on her couch. Literally. He napped for a couple of hours before we all headed off to dinner at Malbec with his lab. The celebratory dinner was a perfect end to a great day; thanks Jess!
