This scrap box only contained one item - the miniaturized styrofoam cup Alex made Amy.January 10, 2009
Alex's field of study takes him to the far reaches of the globe. During the winter of 2009, he spent a month with his fellow lab mates on a cruise in the southern ocean collecting deep-sea coral, discovering never-before-seen ocean life, and watching lots of bad movies.
While he was there, Alex made Amy this small cup from a regular-sized Styrofoam cup. He decorated the sides with messages and pictures of the cats and sent it down with the robotic submarine, Jason, to the depth of 2900 meters, nearly two miles below the surface of the ocean. Alex’s love and thoughtfulness shine so brightly in little things like this cup.
ASIDE: At one point this scrap box was also going to contain a tiny version of the following XKCD comic since it was proudly on display inside the ship:
